A small—circa 3 mm—hairy insect with a stinging, persistent bite that is a vector for various infectious diseases; the New World sandfly, Lutzomyia longipalpis, is a vector for bartonellosis (B bacilliformis) and leishmaniasis (Leishmania mexicana, L braziliensis); the Old World sandfly, Phlebotomus papatasi, is the vector for cutaneous leishmaniasis (Leishmania tropica), sandfly fever; New and Old World sandflies may be vectors for kala-azar (Leishmania donovani)
