SOX8

SOX8

A gene on chromosome 16p13.3 that encodes a member of the SOX (SRY-related HMG-box) family of transcription factors, which regulate embryonic development and determine cell fate. SOX8 may act as a transcription activator after forming a complex with other proteins and may play a role in brain development and activity.

Molecular pathology
SOX8 haploinsufficiency may contribute to the mental retardation in haemoglobin H-related mental retardation (ART-16) syndrome.
