SNAPIN

SNAPIN

A gene on chromosome 1q21.3 that encodes a SNARE-associated protein, which is thought to modulate a step between vesicle priming, fusion and calcium-dependent neurotransmitter release by potentiating the interaction of synaptotagmins with the SNAREs and the plasma-membrane-associated protein SNAP25. SNAPIN is expressed in male germ cells and interacts with SNAP23, SNAP25 and STX4A.

Numerous lipids (i.e., CHOL, arachidonic acid, sphingosine, and phosphatidylserine) and proteins (including synaptotagmin, complexin, snapin, and munc18) are also known to bind SNAREs (Hata et al., 1993; Ilardi et al., 1999; Chen et al., 2002; Mitter et al., 2003; Rickman and Davletov, 2003; Stace and Ktistakis, 2006; Dai et al., 2007; Latham et al., 2007; Darios et al., 2009), and both SNARE ablation and targeted disassembly of complexes by NSF and [alpha]-SNAP would almost certainly have hindered at least several of these selective interactions as well.
