single-fibre electromyography

A procedure used to evaluate the activity of single fibres of selected muscles (e.g., common extensor of fingers) displayed as an action potential on a cathode-ray oscilloscope.

Detection of early defects in neuromuscular junction diseases (e.g., myasthenia gravis, Eaton-Lambert syndrome, botulism) when a clinical (neurologic) exam is still normal.

SF-EMG consists of insertion of small (25 µm in diameter) wire into a superficial muscle, and evaluation of muscle jitter and fibre density.
