right-hand rule

a principle of physics in which the direction of current flow in a wire is related to the position of the imaginary lines of force of the magnetic field about the wire. Thus, if the fingers of the right hand are flexed to represent the magnetic field and the thumb is extended, the thumb points in the direction of current flow.
