A gene whose products are easily detected or measured. In biochemical research it is linked to a gene of interest and used to signal to researchers that the gene has been successfully inserted into a cell or chromosome.

reporter gene

a test GENE with a coding region whose PHENOTYPE can be easily detected. Ideally it should be possible to assay the phenotype quantitatively. The reporter gene may be fused immediately DOWNSTREAM of a regulatory region so that its expression (see GENE EXPRESSION is under the influence of that region. The extent and pattern of expression of the reporter gene construct, determined by assay of phenotype, can be used to analyse gene regulation.
