A perennial herb, the root of which is antidiabetic, anti-inflammatory, diuretic, haemostatic and tonic; it is used to enhance muscle growth and production of bone marrow cells and semen, repair tissue, and to treat constipation, diabetes, internal haemorrhage (menorrhagia, epistaxis, haematuria), low-grade fevers accompanied by night sweats, irregular menses, low back pain, palpitations, premature greying, loss of hearing and vision, and may be of use in rheumatoid arthritis.
 
Toxicity
Abdominal distension, indigestion.
