RAD18

RAD18

A gene on chromosome 3p25-p24 that is highly similar to the Saccharomyces cerevisiae DNA damage repair protein Rad18; it interacts with the human homologue of the yeast Rad6 protein via a conserved RING finger motif.

Molecular pathology
Mutation of the RING finger motif results in defective replication of UV-damaged DNA and hypersensitivity to multiple mutagens.

The enzyme, known as Rad18, detects a protein called DNA polymerase eta (Pol eta) and accompanies it to the sites of sunlight-induced DNA damage, enabling accurate repair.
Several DNA repair genes, MSH2, RAD18, RAD51, RAD54, XRCC1, XRCC4, and XRCC5, and two apoptosis inducers, CASP3 and HCS, were also in this category.
