research and developmentA term which the NHS (UK) defines as work which is designed to provide new knowledge, the findings of which are potentially of value to those facing similar problems elsewhere (i.e., the work is generalisable), and the findings are open to critical examination and accessible to all who could benefit from them (i.e., the work is intended for public dissemination).
