postcodeAn alphanumeric code assigned to each geographic location (address) in the UK.
Generally 3 to 4 alphanumeric characters long (except in London, due to crowding):
• First letter/pair of letters corresponds to the (postcode) area;
• Numbers 0 to 99 alpha correspond to the (postcode) district;
• Followed by space (except on internet forms for US bodies, for which the Zip Code is an uninterrupted string of 5 digits—e.g., 90210). The postcode sector is represented by the outcode plus the first digit of the incode.
3 characters long; used to sort mail at the final delivery office. The incode generally represents a street, part of a street or a single address, and is used for route-planning software.
