Pommy

A slang term used in Australia, New Zealand and South Africa for a Briton understood to be of English heritage. Originally derogatory, the Australian Advertising Standards Board and the New Zealand Broadcasting Standards Authority have deemed Pom and Pomm copacetic terms.

The term is of unknown origin, but theories include derivatives of:

– Pomegranate, due to the colour of sunburnt skin (as well as a rhyming slang for immigrant);
– POME (Prisoner of Mother England), due to British former use of Australia as a penal colony;
– Pommery Champagne, a drink preferred by some English gentleman cricket players on cricket tours.
