polytechnic

A term of historic interest for a non-degree-awarding UK institution of higher (tertiary) education for vocational and applied education in England, Northern Ireland and Wales (known as Central Institutions in Scotland), which (pre-1992) contrasted to universities dedicated to academics and pure research. With the passage of the Further and Higher Education Act 1992, polytechnics became universities allowed to award their own degrees.
