In addition to Central Appalachia, Rhino also has sold out Pennyrile
for 2017 and has made baseload sales at its Castle Valley operation in Utah's western bituminous region as well as its Hopedale mining operation in Ohio for next year.
In addition to the Pennyrile
Parkway, the corridor includes sections of I-24 and the Western Kentucky and Purchase parkways.
Reconstruction of the interchange is part of a larger project to upgrade a portion of the Pennyrile
Parkway to become part of I-69.
, also known as Riveredge, is fully contracted for 2017 at current production levels of 1.3 million tons annually.
The contract is the newest in a series to improve the Purchase Parkway as well as the Pennyrile
Parkway from Henderson to just south of Madisonville so they can become part of I-69 by late 2015.
Continued productivity improvements at Rhino's Pennyrile
underground high-sulfur steam coal mine in western Kentucky have lowered costs and improved coal recovery rates at the three-year-old mine compared to 2015, the company said.
Beshear has initiated four other projects to bring the I-69 corridor up to standards: reconstruction of the KY 416 interchange in Henderson County is complete, while reconstruction of the I-69 Pennyrile
Parkway-Western Kentucky Parkway interchange and the KY 56 interchange near Sebree are underway.
Productivity improvements at Rhino's Pennyrile
underground mine on the Green River in western Kentucky's McLean County helped the company lower its total cost of operations in the January-March period.
For the past couple of years, Rhino has pursued a strategy of reducing its financial and operational exposure in CAPP while focusing more on its new Pennyrile
underground mine in western Kentucky, located in the Illinois Basin, and existing Hopedale and Sands Hill mines in Ohio's Northern Appalachia, as well as its Castle Valley underground operation in Utah.
Output plummeted in Central Appalachia (CAPP), but the Lexington, Kentucky-based company managed to mine more coal in Northern Appalachia and the Illinois Basin (ILB), where its new Pennyrile
underground mine in western Kentucky continues to ramp up to a projected 2 million tons a year.
Rhino Resource Partners has added a second continuous mining section at its Pennyrile
underground high-sulfur steam coal mine, which is working through coal processing and geological issues as it ramps up in western Kentucky.
