A 1988 UNSCEAR report on dose reduction lists a number of possible improvements in X-ray imaging technology; for example, using rare-earth screens, carbon fiber materials, and increased peak kilovoltage. Each of these reduces exposure by a small factor, and such small reductions can combine to produce a large reduction.
