papaverine

 [pah-pav´er-in]
an alkaloid obtained from opium or prepared synthetically; the hydrochloride salt has been used as a smooth muscle relaxant and vasodilator to relieve arterial spasms causing cerebral, peripheral, or myocardial ischemia and is also injected into the penis in the diagnosis and treatment of erectile dysfunction.

A nonnarcotic benzylisoquinoline alkaloid of opium that has mild analgesic action and is a powerful spasmolytic; has been used to treat male impotence by local injection, which works by inhibiting phosphodiesterase in smooth muscle cells. Also available as papaverine hydrochloride.
