Palaeoniscusa genus of extinct bony fish of the PALAEOZOIC ERA possessing bony head plates and GANOID SCALES. Palaeoniscus probably arose from the same stock as the CHOANICHTHYES from which land animals eventually evolved. Present-day relatives include POLYPTERUS.
