PRDX5

A gene on chromosome 11q13 that encodes peroxiredoxin 5, which is involved in intracellular redox signalling. It reduces hydrogen peroxide and alkyl hydroperoxides with reducing equivalents provided in the thioredoxin system.

Prdx5 plays a significant role in the regulation of the transportation of certain molecules in apoptosis, or programmed cell death.
Antioxidants have been shown to limit cell death and levels of Prdx5 have been found to be lower --and inflammation higher--in patients with more severe strokes.
