RBL1

A gene on chromosome 20q11.2 that encodes a key regulator of entry into cell division, which is directly involved in heterochromatin formation by maintaining overall chromatin structure and that of constitutive heterochromatin by stabilising histone methylation. RBL1 recruits and targets histone methyltransferases SUV420H1 and SUV420H2, leading to epigenetic transcriptional repression; it is thought to be a tumour suppresor.

Candidate tissue-specific genes have already been identified for saliva (statherin, histatin 3, PRB1, PRB2, and PRB3), but tissue-specific genes for other body fluids of forensic importance have yet to be identified (Juusola and Ballantyne 2003).
