Of the multidrugresistant isolates, none was both PPNG and TRNG in 1997 and 1998, and 33% (10/21), 62% (66/92), 61% (54/74), 66% (128/193), 64% (93/145), 59% (27/46), 63% (32/53), and 83% (24/29) of the isolates from 1999, 2000, 2001, 2002, 2003, 2004, 2005, and 2006 were both PPNG and TRNG respectively.
Chromosomally-mediated resistance to penicillin is of low-level resistance and results from additive effect of mutations at multiple loci, including penA, mtr, and penB while plasmid-mediated resistance is due to PPNG encoding a TEM-1 type P-lactamase.
gonorrhoeae isolates are likely to spread more quickly than PPNG isolates because of the presence of IeIM plasmid in other flora found in the genital tract that may act as a reservoir.
As a result of this program, the proportion of PPNG among all gonococcal strains in Quebec has decreased from 10% in 1991 and 1992 to 5.
gonorrhoeae were coinfected with Chlamydia trachornatis; 18 (46%) of 39 PPNG episodes and 64 (29%) of 222 nonresistant-gonorrhea episodes involved coinfection with C.
Through outreach efforts (including partner notification and referral), DISs identified 91 persons that represented 130 (33%) of the 390 sexually transmitted infections diagnosed (12 PPNG infections, 62 gonococcal infections, 55 genital chlamydial infections, and one syphilitic infection)(Figure 2); 21 of these infections were identified in other members in the sociosexual network.
During December 1989-March 1991, the 39 gang-related PPNG cases accounted for 70% of the total 56 cases reported in Colorado Springs.
With the increased surveillance capture, the rates of both ciprofloxacin resistance and PPNG predicted by PCR were much lower (less than half) than rates detected by bacterial culture.
