SCN9A

A gene on chromosome 2q24 that encodes an alpha subunit of the voltage-gated sodium channel, which mediates voltage-dependent sodium ion permeability of excitable membranes. The SCN9A protein product plays a major role in nociception signalling.

Molecular pathology
SCN9A mutations are associated with primary erythromelalgia, channelopathy-associated insensitivity to pain and paroxysmal extreme pain disorder.

Changes in PN1 nucleus accumbens neurotransmitter levels were exclusively restricted to the S/150 group, with marginal increases in levels of DOPAC [64%; interaction of Pb and stress: F(1,26) = 3.54, p = 0.071] and significant increases in HVA [37%; interaction of Pb and stress: F(1,26) = 5.62, p = 0.026].
This resulted in a pathologic stage modification in one of these patients due to an increase in the overall number of positive nodes (pT3 pN1 to pT3 pN2).

As the structure of TNM classification of CRC is basically quantitative (pT1 to pT4 according to the involved layers of the intestinal wall and pN1 or pN2 according to the number of metastatic lymph nodes), the insertion of qualitative features related to either the pT or pN category could alter the inherent essence of this classification approach.
