a left atrial abnormality evident on the electrocardiograph as broad notched P waves in v1 and v2.

Left atrial enlargement (LAE) is indicated by the terminal negativity of the P wave in lead V1 of > 0.04 seconds in duration and > 1.0 mm (0.1 mV) in depth (1) and by the P-mitrale configuration of the inferolateral P waves: >0.12 seconds in duration with >0.04 seconds between the 2 positive peaks.
