ozonation

The bubbling of ozone through water as a method of water purification—a process that had been proposed as an alternative to chlorination—which has been linked to an increase in cancer. Ozone reacts with bromine in drinking water, forming unstable compounds that produce an array of potential carcinogens; these compounds bind to DNA more easily than does chloroform, a potentially carcinogenic byproduct of chlorination, raising the question of whether ozonation is appropriate for water purification.
