fluorocarbon(floor′ŏ-kar″bŏn) [ fluor- + carbon]
A general term for a hydrocarbon in which some of the hydrogen atoms have been replaced with fluorine. The use of chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) is discouraged because of their adverse effect on the ozone layer of the earth's atmosphere.
