muskrat

a rabbit-sized aquatic rat that lives in a burrow and lives on vegetable matter, has thick, shiny, brown and gray fur and gives off a musky odor. Called also Ondatra zibethica.

Among the rodents, the muskrat subspecies Ondatra zibethicus ripensis of the Pecos River or the rock mouse, Peromyscus nasutus, which occupies only a few mountainous habitats in the southern and western Trans-Pecos, and which is poorly known ecologically, might be mentioned.
