fibrocystic diseaseChronic cystic mastitis, fibrocystic disease Surgical pathology A common benign disease of the ♀ breast, first seen circa age 40, which presents as diffuse rubbery induration, punctuated by dilated ducts and variably-sized cysts Major patterns Cysts plus fibrosis; sclerosing adenosis; epithelial hyperplasia, which ↑ CA risk. See Ductal intraepithelial neoplasia.
No risk for future cancer: FCD with adenosis–sclerosing or florid, apocrine metaplasia, cysts–macro- or microscopic, ductal ectasia, fibroadenoma, fibrosis, hyperplasia
Minimal risk for future cancer: with glandular 'crowding', ie 2-4 epithelial cells in depth, mastitis, especially periductal, squamous metaplasia
1.5-2-fold ↑ risk of future cancer: with hyperplasia–moderate or florid, solid or papillary or in a papilloma with a fibrovascular core
2-5-fold ↑ risk of future cancer: with atypical hyperplasia–borderline lesion, either ductal or lobular
8-10-fold ≠ risk of future invasive cancer Carcinoma-in-situ
