nature versus nurture
a name given to a long-standing controversy as to the relative influences of genetics versus the environment in the development of personality. Nature is represented by instincts and genetic factors and nurture by social influences.
nature versus nurture The perennial argument as to whether heredity or environment is more influential in determining the outcome of any individual's development. It is now apparent that the two are so intimately inter-related in their effects as to almost inseparable.
