Although not for everyone, involved family members should be introduced to 12-step support groups such as Al-Anon or Naranon. Al-Anon's purpose (as stated in its Web site) is "to help families and friends recover from the effects of living with the problem drinking of a relative or friend." Naranon "offers support for families and friends of people who are addicted to or recovering from drugs." Al-Anon and Naranon meetings are available at no cost to participants in all communities; thus, family members can begin to establish a readily available support network.
