HCAR2

A gene on chromosome 12q24.31 that encodes a G protein-coupled receptor. HCAR2 is a high-affinity receptor for nicotinic acid/niacin and for beta-hydroxybutyrate; it increases adiponectin secretion and reduces lipolysis through G(i)-protein-mediated inhibition of adenylyl cyclase.

NIACR1 inhibits cyclic adenosine monophosphate (cAMP) production, which limits fat breakdown in adipose tissue, reducing the amount of free fatty acids available for the liver to produce triglycerides and very-low-density lipoproteins (VLDL) and, consequently, low-density lipoprotein (LDL) or "bad" cholesterol.
