KLK10

A gene on chromosome 19q13 that encodes a serine protease which is expressed in the breast, ovary and prostate; it has a tumour suppressor role in breast and prostate cancer.

The normal epithelial cell-specific 1 (NES1) gene is up-regulated by steroid hormones in the breast carcinoma cell line BT-474.

Interestingly, among the newly discovered members of the kallikrein gene family, two other proteins, the normal epithelial cell-specific 1 gene product, NES1 (20, 21), and protease M, also known as zyme or neurosin (22), also appear to behave as tumor suppressors in breast and other tissues.
