NOS1A gene on chromosome 12q14-qter that encodes neuronal nitric oxide synthase (nNOS), a widely expressed enzyme that produces nitric oxide (NO). A messenger molecule with diverse functions throughout the body, nNOS plays a role in a wide range of physiological and pathological processes, including neurotransmission, neurotoxicity, muscle contraction, sexual function, fluid homeostasis and atherosclerosis.
