The causative agent in mammals is mycobacteria belonging to the "Mycobacterium tuberculosis complex" (2) which comprises of Mycobacterium tuberculosis, Mycobacterium bovis, Mycobacterium africanum, Mycobacterium microti, Mycobacterium caprae and Mycobacterium canetti. Mycobacterium tuberculosis is the major human pathogen, although the other members of the complex especially Mycobacterium bovis has been recognized as a potential human pathogen.
All known cases of tuberculosis caused by Mycobacterium canetti have been contracted in the Horn of Africa.
