suraminA derivative of urea which has currency as an antiparasitic and been used to manage trypanosomiasis and onchocerciasis. Suramin was evaluated by the US National Cancer Institute for managing prostate cancer, but was dropped from its research in 2008.
Suramin has been used by alternative health practitioners as a cancer therapy, based on its ability to block enzyme activity and the production of growth factors. It has been used for leukaemia, as well as cancers of the adrenal cortex, breast, kidney and prostate; its effect may be enhanced by adding tumour necrosis factor and/or interferon-gamma to the therapeutic regimen.
