Medical Emergency Response Incident Team

The term used in the UK for a team of medical personnel deployed in a major incident (disaster), which is comprised of at least one doctor and one nurse who stay together unless ordered to do otherwise. Ideally they should not come from the hospital receiving casualties—as receiving hospitals need all their staff—although in remote regions of the country this may not be feasible.

The MERIT is equipped with basic airway, breathing and circulation equipment, but without antidotes for chemical weapons, non-emergency agents such as tetanus vaccine or any other non-essential equipment. Once on the scene, the MERIT reports to the Medical Incident Officer (MIO) whose location is flagged by a flashing green beacon. Absent an MIO, the MERIT reports to the Ambulance Incident Officer (AIO) flagged by a flashing blue light. The MERIT will likely be sent to the Casualty Clearing Station but may be required to assist with the triage and treatment of entrapped casualties; it should not get involved in search and rescue, counselling victims or commanding ambulance personnel.
