The term Level 7 refers to the highest level of the International Standards Organisation's communications model for Open Systems Interconnection—the application level—which addresses definition of the data to be exchanged, timing of the exchange and the communication of certain errors in the application. Level 7 supports such functions as security checks, participant identification, availability checks, exchange mechanism negotiations and, most importantly, data exchange structuring.
