mittelschmerz

Pain or discomfort in the lower abdomen felt by women at the time of OVULATION, between menstrual periods. The cause is uncertain but is thought to be either stretching of the Graafian follicle or irritation of the PERITONEUM from blood or follicle fluid. The term is German for ‘middle pain’.
