hobbitname given to Homo floresiensis, a fossil hominid recently discovered on the island of Flores, in Indonesia, and so named after J.J.R.Tolkien's hobbit because of its diminutive size. About 1m in height, with a skull volume of only around 380ml, the oldest example was aged at 95,000 years and the youngest at 13,000 years. Like H.neanderthalensis , it coexisted with H.sapiens.
