A now-extinct UK agency which had the legal responsibility to protect the interests of all patients detained in England and Wales under the Mental Health Act 1983, 2007. It was one of 3 UK agencies (the other two were the Commission for Social Care Inspection and the Healthcare Commission) which were absorbed by the Care Quality Commission in 2009.
