The Mattoid is the musical alter ago of Ville Kiviniemi, a troubadour from Helsinki.
Editor of the literary journal Mattoid, he writes poetry, fiction and criticism and his work appears in many books and journals.
He saw in cranial malformations clues to aberrational behaviors, believed strongly that crime was a throwback to atavistic behaviors, and marred his pioneering studies by citing anecdotal "evidence" such as "Murderers are not great wine drinkers [but] love gambling and sex," or "All criminals, particularly thieves and murders, show precocious development of the genitals." His illustrations of criminal types and indicators (e.g., "Mattoids and Morally Insane Revolutionaries," "Criminal Feet," "Tattoos of Criminals") remain fascinating; tables such as "Anomalies in 180 Nursery School Children" remain disturbing even if "abnormalities of moral character tend to disappear with proper education."
