mass spectrometry

(mas spek-trom'ĕ-trē),
The analysis obtained using a mass spectrograph.

mass spectrometry

A method for identifying molecules based on the detection of the mass-to-charge ratio of ions generated from the molecule by vaporisation and electron bombardment. Deflection of the ions through a magnetic field results in a characteristic pattern which is used to define the molecule of interest.

The Mass Spec TEIS-3200 is ideal for applications where the method requires a large quantity of sample measurements in a relatively short period of time or where automation is required.
While conventional mass spectrometers are confined to centralized laboratories by their large size, fragility and complexity of operation and maintenance, 908 Devices' HPMS technology is a portable mass spec system.
Though traditional mass spec is powerful, a sample has to be carefully prepared to facilitate molecule separation, the analysis has to be done in a vacuum and testing one sample can take 30 minutes.
Boyd (National Research Council, Ottawa, Canada) Basic (Basic Mass Spec. Winnipeg, Canada) and Bethem (Alts Analytical laboratory, California) present an introduction to the field of mass spectrometry in organic compounds.
"When they went into the mass spec business with the first benchtop mass spec, I could really see that this was an opportunity to get mass spectrometry, which was my field of interest at that time, into the hands of the researchers, not only in the core labs, but making it available to chemists who were doing research at the bench," he explained.
Scientists from Bristol University And Mass Spec Analytical Ltd found that the amount of drugs on pounds 10 and pounds 20 banknotes was the same wherever it was collected.
The identity of the protein was determined by mass spec and was found to be a protein previously identified and called PSF, a protein of multi functions one of which is RNA splicing.
Scientists withdrew thousands of pounds in pounds 5, pounds 10, pounds 20 and pounds 50 notes from various banks around Birmingham and tested them for traces of hard drugs - and they found more than 99 per cent were contaminated, A spokeswoman for Bristolbased Mass Spec Analytical, which carried out the tests, said: 'Nearly every note in the city was contaminated with cocaine.
It has been suggested that the adulterant be analyzed by "mass spec." Can you explain what that is?
Reid came to Canada in the 1970s to do further mass spec work at the University of Toronto's aerospace institute, including another NASA initiative to analyze the atmosphere on Mars.
More than 500 notes worth pounds 7,750, in all four denominations, were examined by Mass Spec Analytical, based in Bristol, using notes supplied by the Bank of England's Returned Notes centre in Loughton in Essex.
