MUC6

A gene on chromosome 11p15.5 which encodes gastric mucin, a secreted glycoprotein that plays an essential role in epithelial cytoprotection from acid, proteases, pathogenic microorganisms and mechanical trauma in the gastrointestinal tract. MUC6 may help modulate the composition of the protective mucus layer related to acid secretion or the presence of bacteria and noxious agents in the lumen, and play a role in the cytoprotection of epithelial surfaces and in epithelial organogenesis.

MUC6 has shown promise as a tumour marker.
