MUC17

A gene on chromosome 7q22.1 which encodes a membrane mucin that protects cells, maintains luminal structure, provides signal transduction and confers anti-adhesive properties on cancer cells that have lost their normal apical/basal polarisation.

Based on the structure and function of a molecule, mucin is subdivided into 3 categories: membrane-bound mucins (MUC1, MUC3 MUC4, MUC12, MUC16, MUC17), gel-forming (secreted) mucins (MUC2, MUC5AC, MUC5B, MUC6, MUC19), and soluble mucin (MUC7).
The level of mucins including MUC1, MUC2, MUC3, MUC5AC, and MUC6 in bile duct with intrahepatic stone is obviously higher in bile duct without intrahepatic stone.

MUC4 was the most prevalent mucin gene expressed in 78% of samples (7/9 of samples) followed by MUC3 and 5AC (67% each).
Indeed, binding of IL-22 to its heterodimeric receptor, comprising IL10R2 and IL-22R1, on epithelial cells triggers the transcription factor STAT3, thereby promoting synthesis of antimicrobial peptides and proteins (i.e., [beta]-defensins, RegIII[beta] and RegIII[gamma], calgranulins S100A8 and S100A9, and lipocalin-2) and elevated levels of mucus-associated molecules (i.e., Muc1, Muc3, Muc10, and Muc13), with the downstream effect of limiting the translocation of commensal bacteria across the epithelial barrier during inflammation [47].

Goblet cells produce secretory (MUC2, MUC5AC, MUC5B, and MUC6), membrane-associated mucins (MUC1, MUC3, MUC4, MUC13, and/or MUC17), and trefoil factors (TFF1-3), which are responsible for epithelial restitution [2, 7].
