MUC17

MUC17

A gene on chromosome 7q22.1 which encodes a membrane mucin that protects cells, maintains luminal structure, provides signal transduction and confers anti-adhesive properties on cancer cells that have lost their normal apical/basal polarisation.

Based on the structure and function of a molecule, mucin is subdivided into 3 categories: membrane-bound mucins (MUC1, MUC3 MUC4, MUC12, MUC16, MUC17), gel-forming (secreted) mucins (MUC2, MUC5AC, MUC5B, MUC6, MUC19), and soluble mucin (MUC7).
Goblet cells produce secretory (MUC2, MUC5AC, MUC5B, and MUC6), membrane-associated mucins (MUC1, MUC3, MUC4, MUC13, and/or MUC17), and trefoil factors (TFF1-3), which are responsible for epithelial restitution [2, 7].
