MUC16

MUC16

A gene on chromosome 19p13.2 which encodes a protein that provides a protective lubricating barrier against particles and infectious agents at mucosal surfaces. It is more commonly known as CA125, and is a highly characteristic marker of ovarian carcinomas.

analyzed 9 PCNSLs and identified recurrent somatic mutations in 37 genes involved in key biological processes, including transcription ( ETV6, IRF2BP2, EBF1, IRF4, and TBL1XR1 ), cell cycle ( PIM1, BTG1 ), nucleosome assembly ( HIST1H1D, HIST1H2AC ), and cell adhesion ( MUC16, ACTG1 ), as well as NF-?

8-13) MUC4 and MUC16 are transmembrane glycoproteins that, through alterations in the expression and nature of glycosylation, can affect cell adhesion, protein-protein interaction, and immune responses, all of which can facilitate tumor development and metastasis.
As documented with great care in this issue, the research team determined that the ELISA kit they had been using did not identify CUZD1, but identified MUC16 (CA125), a previously well-qualified biomarker for ovarian cancer that is also highly expressed in pancreatic and lung cancers (11).
CA125 [also known as MUC16 (mucin 16, cell surface associated)] may contribute to ovarian cancer pathogenesis (31).
