AKAP9A gene on chromosome 7q21-q22 that encodes a member of the structurally diverse A-kinase anchor protein (AKAP) family, which binds to the regulatory subunits (RI/RII) of protein kinase A (PKA), confining the enzyme to discrete locations within the cell based on different targeting motifs. AKAP9 binds to the RII-alpha subunit of PKA, and may be required to maintain the integrity of the Golgi apparatus. Isoform 4’s association with the N-methyl-D-aspartate receptor, the neuromuscular junction and neuronal synapses, suggests a role in the organisation of postsynaptic specialisations.
