SOD2

A gene on chromosome 6q25.3 that encodes a mitochondrial  superoxide dismutase which binds superoxide byproducts of oxidative phosphorylation, converting them to hydrogen peroxide and diatomic oxygen.

Molecular pathology
SOD2 mutations are associated with idiopathic cardiomyopathy, premature ageing, sporadic motor neurone disease, and cancer.
