MMP13

A gene on chromosome 11q22.3 that encodes matrix metalloproteinase 13, which cleaves collagens I in the extracellular matrix. MMP13 may play a role in turnover of articular cartilage.

Molecular pathology
Defects in MMP13 cause spondyloepimetaphyseal dysplasia Missouri type and metaphyseal anadysplasia type 1. MMP13 may play a role in the pathogenesis of osteoarthritis.

A family of zinc-dependent endopeptidases known as the matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs), especially active MMP13, then triggers the collagenase activity.
Metalloproteinases belong to a large family of zinc-dependent endopeptidases that include collagenases (e.g., MMP1, MMP8, and MMP13), gelatinases (MMP2, MMP9), stromelysins (MMP3, MMP10), matrilysins (MMP7, MMP26), and transmembrane metalloproteinases types I and II.
