MC5R

MC5R

A gene on chromosome 18p11.2 that encodes a receptor for alpha, beta and gamma melanocyte stimulating hormone (MSH), the activity of which is mediated by G protein-activated adenylate cyclase. MC5R is thought to mediate the immunomodulatory properties of melanocortins and may play a role in sebum production.

MC3R expression was found in murine and rat macrophages [39,40] and in RAW 264.7 cells [41] and expression of MC1R, MC3R, and MC5R was detected in THP-1 cells [27,42].
These effects are caused by a-MSH interacting with its specific membrane receptors: MC1R, MC2R, MC3R, MC4R, and MC5R. In fur animals, growth-related features are particularly important as body weight is associated with the quantity of harvested skin/fur, which directly translates into its value.
(2001) suggested that HFABP and the melanocortin-receptor 5 (MC5R) may constitute positional candidate genes for QTL affecting IMF.
Essa classe de receptores tem seis isoformas que sao: MC1R, MC2R, MC3R, MC4R, MC5R e o MC6R, porem somente o MC2R e expresso na glandula adrenal (FLUCK; MILLER, 2008).
To date, scientists have identified five melanocortin receptors (named MC1R through MC5R), all of which differ slightly from each other regarding chemical structure, binding affinity for certain peptides, and biological function.
