In an attempt to elucidate how antioxidants induce the production of glucocorticoids by the HPA axis, we analyzed the expression of adrenal MC2R. Prolonged treatment with NAC increases adrenal MC2R expression.
Although the increased expression of MC2R and StAR alone may explain the increase in glucocorticoids levels, other molecular alterations can also participate in the HPA axis hyperactivity noted after antioxidant treatment.
