Lucythe first example of Australopithecus afarensis, some three million years old, found by the American palaeoanthropologist Donald Johanson at Hadar, in Ethiopia. Lucy has the human characteristics of upright stance, arched feet and long thumbs but the ape-like features of small size (less than 4 ft tall), short legs, long arms, small brain and hunched shoulders.
