the environmental temperature defining the lower limit of the THERMONEUTRAL ZONE of a tachymetabolic animal (see TACHYMETABOLISM). Below the lower critical temperature the animal must undergo REGULATORY HEAT PRODUCTION in addition to its BASAL METABOLIC RATE to maintain homoiothermy (see HOMOIOTHERM).
